Who Is Allowed to Enroll in Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
To qualify for the CDCP, you must meet the following conditions:
- No private dental insurance coverage
- Annual household income should not exceed $90,000
- A Canadian resident
- Has filed taxes in the previous year
CDCP Rollout Schedule
The Government of Canada is implementing the CDCP in stages, and this means that only certain groups of people can apply for the plan at certain time intervals:
- Aged 87+: You can apply in December, 2023.
- Aged 77-86: You are entitled to apply in January, 2024.
- Aged 72-76: You can apply in February, 2024.
- Aged 70-71: You are eligible to apply in March, 2024.
- Aged 65-69: You are eligible to apply in May, 2024.
- Adults with a Disability Tax Credit and children under 18: You can apply for this in June, 2024.
- All other Canadian residents: You can apply starting in 2025.
What to Do When You Get Enrolled in the Program
When you are admitted to the CDCP, you will get a package that contains your benefits card and the date when your benefits will begin. It is important to note that any treatment done before your designated start date will not be reimbursed. The earliest start date for coverage will be May 2024.
What's Included in the CDCP?
The CDCP offers a comprehensive package that covers the following dental services:
- Basic services
- Endodontics (root canals)
- Periodontics (gum treatments)
- Restorative treatment (fillings, crowns)
- Major treatments (dentures, bridges)
- Oral surgery
However, some services which require pre-authorization will not be covered until November 2024, when the pre-determination service will be introduced.
Orthodontics are not included in the current plan. However, a special orthodontic program will be introduced in 2025, but it will be available only to those who need it for medical reasons.
Dependents’ Coverage Based on Household Income
The amount of coverage that you will get depends on the income of the household that you belong to:
- Households with an income of less than $70,000: 100% coverage (this means that you will not be required to pay for the treatment out of your own pocket)
- Households earning $70,000-$79,999: 60% coverage (40% co-payment)
- Households earning $80,000-$89,999: 40% coverage (60% co-payment)
